About the Event

Arts education is a key medium where students learn and develop social skills and emotional intelligence. Many teaching artists already support students in building these skills as an indirect result of the work they do. This professional development will introduce teaching artists to intentional ways to bring social and emotional skills into the classroom for K-12 grade students. Teaching artists will strategize ways to use their artistry to help students’ development of self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy. Workshop facilitator Kendrick Dial will lead participants through the following topics:

  • Strategies to create a positive classroom culture
  • Using your art form to help students develop self-awareness and self-management
  • Adapt existing lesson plans to incorporate activities & games that increase empathy and build social skills
  • Learn to assess what’s happening in the classroom and adjust to maximize skill building
