Learning Through the Arts
Title I Initiative
San Diego Unified School District and Arts for Learning San Diego
The San Diego Unified School District’s Learning Through the Arts Title 1 Initiative is a collaborative co-teaching model designed to complement the study of an academic subject area through the visual and performing arts. This model, implemented in Title I schools, supports increased academic achievement, strengthens the school climate, sparks and sustains student engagement, and boosts parent involvement.
Arts for Learning San Diego manages the Initiative as partners with SDUSD, in the following ways:
Partnering as an active and integral member of the Title I Leadership Team
Coordinating and advising participating schools in the selection of qualified Arts Integration Teaching Artists
Establishing a standard administrative process for contracting and compensating teaching artists and nonprofit providers
Co-creating professional development workshops focusing on arts integration and the co-teaching model
Upholding high expectations for Teaching Artists by monitoring their progress and collecting performance data which includes site visits, overseeing professional learning communities and conducting meetings with classroom teachers and artists

“I have never seen my students more enthused or happy. Now they have a way to express themselves. Children that I have never seen speak are empowered, and teachers love it. This program provides a way for the students to have a break in their daily struggles.”
